Eco-Friendly Packaging: 7 Practical Steps for Growing Brands

Kraft Mailer Boxes

More customers now notice how products are packed, and many prefer brands that waste less. The good news is that more sustainable packaging often saves money too. Here are seven practical steps any growing brand can take.

1. Right-size every box

Oversized boxes waste board, need more void fill and take up more space in delivery vans. Custom sizing your boxes to your products is one of the simplest ways to use less material and reduce shipping costs at the same time.

2. Choose recyclable board

Paper-based materials such as kraft board, SBS cardstock and corrugated board are widely recyclable. Kraft and corrugated board are also commonly made with recycled fibres. Ask your supplier which stocks are available with recycled content.

3. Cut down on plastic

Swap plastic fillers, bubble wrap and plastic windows for paper-based alternatives where you can:

  • die-cut cardboard inserts instead of foam,
  • crinkle paper or tissue instead of plastic fill,
  • open window cut-outs, or paper-based films, instead of PVC windows where protection allows.

4. Keep finishes light

Heavy plastic laminations can make board harder to recycle. If sustainability is a priority, consider uncoated kraft, aqueous coatings or a single spot finish instead of full lamination. A one- or two-colour design on natural kraft can look just as striking as full colour.

5. Design for reuse

A sturdy mailer with a clean tuck closure is easy to reuse for storage or returns. Some brands print a small note inside the lid inviting customers to reuse the box, which keeps your brand in their home for longer.

6. Make disposal easy

Customers want to do the right thing but are not always sure how. A short line on the box, such as “Please recycle this box”, and avoiding mixed materials that are hard to separate both help packaging end up in the right bin.

7. Tell your story honestly

If you have made your packaging greener, say so, but be specific and accurate. “Made from recyclable board” is clear and trustworthy; vague claims like “100% eco” can mislead customers. Only use certification marks your supplier and materials genuinely hold.

Small changes add up

You do not need to change everything at once. Start with right-sizing and recyclable board, then review fillers and finishes when you next reorder. Each step reduces waste, and many also lower your packaging and shipping costs.
