Custom Box Finishes Explained: Foil, Spot UV, Embossing and More

Cosmetic Gift Sets Packaging 3

Printing puts your design on the box. Finishing is what makes people pick it up. The right finish adds texture, shine or depth, and it can make an affordable box feel far more premium. Here is a plain-English guide to the most popular options.

Lamination: the base layer

Lamination is a thin film applied over the printed board. It protects the print from scuffs and moisture and sets the overall feel of the box.

  • Gloss lamination makes colours look brighter and more saturated. Great for bold, colourful brands and food packaging.
  • Matte lamination gives a smooth, low-glare surface that looks modern and understated.
  • Soft-touch lamination has a velvety feel that customers notice the moment they touch the box. A favourite for cosmetics and luxury goods.

Foil stamping

Foil stamping uses heat and pressure to press a thin metallic layer onto the box. Gold and silver are classic, while rose gold, copper and holographic foils are popular for beauty and gift packaging.

Use it for: logos, product names and small decorative details. Foil works best on clean, solid shapes; very thin lines or tiny text can lose definition.

Spot UV

Spot UV is a clear, glossy coating applied only to selected areas. On a matte box, it creates a striking contrast between shiny and flat surfaces that catches the light as the box moves.

Use it for: highlighting a logo, a pattern or a product image. It is a subtle way to add a premium touch without changing your colours.

Embossing and debossing

Embossing raises part of the design above the surface, while debossing presses it in. Both add a tactile, three-dimensional element that customers can feel with their fingers.

They can be used alone (called blind embossing) for an elegant, minimal look, or combined with foil or print so the raised area is also coloured.

Aqueous coating

A water-based coating that protects the print and adds a light gloss or matte sheen. It is an economical option when you want some protection without full lamination.

Window cut-outs

A die-cut window, often backed with a clear film, lets customers see the product without opening the box. It works well for bakery items, toys, soaps and retail products where the item itself is the selling point.

Popular combinations

  • Soft-touch + gold foil: the classic luxury look for cosmetics and gifts.
  • Matte + spot UV: modern and sleek, ideal for tech and men’s grooming.
  • Kraft + blind deboss: natural and premium, great for candles and artisan goods.
  • Gloss + full colour: bright and eye-catching for food, toys and promotions.

Tips before you choose

  1. Pick one hero finish rather than stacking many; restraint usually looks more premium.
  2. Keep foil and embossed elements a sensible size so they reproduce crisply.
  3. Ask for a 3D mock-up or physical sample if the finish is central to your design.
  4. Consider recyclability: uncoated or aqueous-coated boards are easier to recycle than heavily laminated ones.
